Passing Place is thrilled to present its third exhibition, celebrating artworks by a wide range of artists inviting us to consider how we show our own identities, here in multicultural west Scotland.
Conceptually, the process of deciding upon our ‘identity’ stimulates us to question who we are and consider the choices we make when displaying our individual identities, sense of belonging and personal agency.
The artworks by Calum Colvin, Kate Davies, Lorna Freytag, Alan Grieve, Rory Hamilton, Danny Holcroft, Rudy Kanhye + Lauren La Rose, Thomas Keyes, Knockvologan Studio, Kevin Maringer, Cate McKillop, Leena Nammari, Charlie Prodger, Christine Sloman, Mary Trodden, Zine-Amalia and Miek Zwamborn explore a wide range of issues and narratives which have the potential to both unite us and separate us.
Curated by Deirdre MacKenna and Rory Hamilton, the exhibition continues Passing Place's exploration of the themes of Belonging, Place and Identity to invite dialogues toward more insights and collaborations between our visitors, the artists and Passing Place.
In today's diverse worlds, we curate emblems, symbols, colours and codes as signifiers of our identity.
We modify these every day as we decide what to wear or edit out; old-Scots, new-Scots, Celt, Gael, traditional, heteronormative, queer, urban, rural, islander, sea-farer, climate-caring, conventional, iconoclastic, experimental.
These are all ways of showing our allegiance to the intangible beliefs, cultures and nationalities of the societies and communities we want to belong to.
We invite you to consider some of the aspects of identity we may have taken for granted and overlooked, such as the cultural and economic wealth we have profited from through historical and contemporary colonial actions, and to challenge simple assumptions and stereotypes and recognise the value of difference, diversity and acceptance, beyond personal comfort.
